The new Triber, recently revealed in New Delhi, India, is an affordable seven-seat crossover type model from Renault aimed at the GO+ model of its sister-brand Datsun. Slotting in just above the Kwid, the Triber is expected to reach South Africa some time next year.
Sharing the CMF-A platform with the GO+ the Triber is described as a joint project between the French manufacturer’s divisions in India and France and will be produced in Chennai. It is set to go on sale in India later this year, at what Renault term “a competitive price”.
As the GO+ the new Triber is under four metres long, and therefore eligible for reduced excise duty in India. According to Renault the Triber has the largest boot in its category (625 litres in five-seater configuration with the third row of seats removed). It is also light, weighing under a ton.
It shares many interior amenities with its Datsun cousin, including an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, a digital instrument cluster, and four airbags. Rear parking sensors and a reversing camera will also be available.
On the outside, the Triber looks like an oversized Kwid, much like the GO+ is an extended version of the GO hatch. The front-end incorporates a prominent grille dominated by a large Renault logo, flanked by sweptback headlights. The front bumper features thin LED strips acting as daytime running lights.
While the GO+ is powered by a Nissan-sourced 1,2-litre engine, the Triber will be equipped with the naturally aspirated Renault 1,0-litre three-cylinder petrol mill developing 53 kW and 96 Nm. The power plant will be mated to either a five-speed manual or an automated manual transmission.
