Fire and Ice

In Iceland, the latest incarnation of the largest and most versatile Mini in John Cooper Works (JCW) Trim – to be released in South Africa shortly – impressed in extreme winter conditions off the beaten track.

With its modern all-wheel drive system, the new Mini Countryman S All4 (recently caught doing hot-weather testing in the Cape Province) is set to be introduced here shortly, and with its noticeable increase in traction, safety and agility, the comfortable crossover model is ready for all adventures.

As part of its cold-weather testing regime, the two-digit sub-zero temperatures, deep snow-covered routes and uneven scree tracks of Iceland promised real challenges. In John Cooper Works Trim with a bright chili red body colour and a black contrasting, the grown crossover model exuded a visually superior presence in the breathtaking natural beauty of the large volcanic island.

The rough terrain, snow-covered scree tracks and icy climbs of winter in Iceland challenged the precise driving qualities of the new Countryman S All4. The fast and precise electronic control system that distributes the drive power between the front and rear wheels as needed, in combination with the slightly increased track width and increased wheelbase, made it easy.

The chassis that can be adjusted differently depending on the surface and environment, and a well-balanced and comfortably adjusted suspension proved ideal for exploring the Icelandic crater landscape. The powerful 2.0-litre twin power turbo engine, delivering 160 kW and 360 Nm of torque, and coupled with a 48V mild hybrid system, was impressive on the long, straight and smooth roads of Iceland.

With John Cooper Works Trim the Countryman S All4 looks distinctive with diffusers front and rear, LED headlights with the selected JCW signature (only showing two horizontal stripes as daytime running lights) and accentuate the minimalist design language. The JCW logo features clear outlines and the typical red-white-black colour scheme on the octagonal front grille. The logo also adorns the distinctive C-pillar.

The bright atmosphere in the interior is reinforced by the panoramic glass roof. In JCW Trim, equipment-specific seats made of high-quality synthetic leather with red contrasting stitching and the knitted surfaces of the interior door trim and dashboard.

Driving Assistant Plus adds the option of partially automated Level 2 driving to the Countryman for the first time. This allows the driver to take his hands off the steering wheel up to a speed of 60 km/h, provided he continues to closely monitor the traffic and remains ready to intervene at any time.
