The new Maserati Levante, named after a Mediterranean wind that can change from a mild breeze to a tempest in an instant, breezed onto our shores earlier this year.

Initially, only one model with a high performance diesel engine will be locally available, starting from R1,652,360. The 3-litre V6 turbo diesel engine, mated to a super smooth eight-speed ZF transmission, and boasting 202 kW of power and 600 Nm of torque, is claimed to accelerate the Levante from 0-100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 230 km/h. Consumption is claimed to be just 7.2 l/100km, in part due to the Start & Stop system.
The Levante offers a full range of advanced driver assistance systems, and the Active Sound exhaust system ensures a satisfying V6 growl from the engine, which unfortunately flatters to deceive as the diesel lacks pure grunt. An All-Wheel Drive system in combination with an exceptional air suspension system endows the Italian thoroughbred with solid road manners. Its handling is secure and reassuring, if not exciting, and its hydraulic steering system is well-weighted and accurate, while its brake performance is class-leading. Besides engine power, the new Levante delivers in terms of brand promise.
