KING OF AFRICA RECEIVES SUBTLE TWEAKS

Combining a large seven-seat SUV configuration, legendary off-road credentials, a rugged ladder-frame construction and a robust V8 diesel engine, the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 remains a key player in the large-SUV market segment.

For 2018, the flagship model in the ’Cruiser family has received some subtle tweaks. Two grades options are still offered, but the utility-focused entry level model is now rebadged as GX-R (GX of old) to align the naming convention with its luxurious VX-R sibling.

Notable changes to the VX-R model include a new front grille design with two horizontal slats intersecting the large grille opening, replacing the previously utilised multi-slat design. A smoked treatment has been applied to the Bi-LED headlamps and LED fog lamps. The headlamps include Auto High Beam functionality, super bright LED illumination, and daytime running lights.

A new brown interior colour is now also available, and the VX-Rs impressive specification list includes Blind Spot Monitoring, auto-dimming mirrors, an integrated tow hitch, a leather interior, power-adjustable and ventilated front seats, three-zone climate control, Optitron instrumentation, surround view cameras, satellite navigation, and touchscreen infotainment.

A Smart Entry system, tyre pressure monitoring, Multi-Terrain Select (switchable off-road driving modes), Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), crawl control, and a full suite of electronic driving aids, including a Lane Keeping system, are also standard.

Both models are powered by a 4.5-litre V8 turbodiesel engine delivering 195 kW at 3,400 rpm and 650 Nm at 1,600 – 2,600 rpm. The GX-R 6AT is available at R1,021,900 and the 4.5D V8 VX-R 6AT at R1,405,600.
