The most capable, most awarded, full-size SUV on the planet has just been transformed into the most powerful and quickest ever. That is the word from Jeep, with the release of their new Grand Cherokee Trackhawk in the good ole’ US of A.
Packing an unmatched 520 kW and 875 Nm, courtesy of a high-tech supercharged 6.2-liter Dodge Hellcat V8 engine, combined with an upgraded TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, the Trackhawk delivers class-leading performance figures. So, AMG, M, RS and QV, beware.
According to Detroit, their latest thunder-chariot cracks the 0-100 km/h acceleration acid test in 3.5 seconds and the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds (at 186 km/h) before it tops out at 288 km/h. That is very fast, taking into account that the Trackhawk weighs in at 2,433 kg, mostly by reason of its Quadra-Trac all-wheel drive system.
Its engine, like all Hemi V8s, is a mix of old-school and brand new technology. Perhaps the most impressive figure relates to the strength of the crankshaft: it can withstand firing pressures of nearly 110 bar – the equivalent of five family sedans standing on each piston, every two revolutions.
Its twin-scroll supercharger can spin to a maximum of 14,600 rpm, launch control is standard to assist take-offs; and five drive modes can be selected, namely Auto-mode, Sport, Track, Tow, Snow, and Custom mode.
Massive vented front discs with six-piston Brembo callipers and vented rear discs with four-pot Brembos ensure a 96-0 km/h braking distance of 35 meters. It rides 25 mm lower on its adaptive suspension and is kitted to the hilt – all nappa leather and suede – with a full house of driver aids.
Will it be available here? Well, word is that it is at least under consideration for the local market. Only time will tell if it does indeed make it to our shores.
